It happens to everyone eventually: the door swings shut, the deadbolt clicks, and your keys are on the kitchen counter. In a Truckee winter, a lockout isn't just annoying — at 15°F it can be genuinely unsafe. Here's what to do, in order.
1. Check every door and ground-floor window — once
Walk the house. Garage side doors, sliders, mudroom entries and crawl-space access doors are forgotten more often than front doors. Check, but don't force anything — a pried slider or bent frame usually costs far more to fix than a professional unlock.
2. Think about who else has a key
Spouse, property manager, neighbor, cleaner, HOA office. In vacation-home country, a surprising number of lockouts end with one phone call to a caretaker.
3. Skip the credit card and the YouTube tricks
Card tricks only work on spring latches with no deadlatch — almost nothing installed in the last few decades. What the tricks do reliably accomplish: gouged weatherstripping, snapped cards and scratched doors. And never attempt a window at height, especially with snow and ice underfoot.
4. Call a local locksmith — and ask two questions
Ask: “Are you licensed and local?” and “What will it cost?” A legitimate local shop can answer both straight. California locksmiths are licensed (ours is LCO #1319), and an honest shop gives you a real phone estimate before rolling. Be wary of too-good-to-be-true internet prices that triple on arrival — it's the oldest scam in this trade.
5. After you're back in: fix the reason it happened
Most lockouts have a root cause — one key for the household, an auto-locking handleset, no spare anywhere. Cheap fixes: a couple of extra keys, a keypad deadbolt for one door, or rekeying so one key runs every lock in the house.
