Keys are the wrong tool for guest turnover

Physical-key handoffs fail in every direction: guests arrive at 11pm, keys go home to the Bay Area in a parka pocket, and every lost key really means “rekey the house.” A code-based deadbolt or smart lock ends the whole category of problem.

What to look for at altitude

• Cold-rated electronics. Quality keypad deadbolts are rated well below zero — but batteries aren't equal. Lithium cells handle cold far better than alkaline.
• A real mechanical key override, kept by the owner or caretaker — dead batteries shouldn't strand a guest in a snowstorm.
• Grade 2 or better hardware. Rental doors see many times the use of a family home's. Bargain-bin keypads wear out mid-season.
• Storm-door and slider discipline: guests love decks; deck sliders need functioning locks and secondary bars.

Codes: one per audience

Give guests a per-stay code (most platforms can automate this), give cleaners and caretakers their own standing codes, and keep an owner master. When someone leaves your orbit, you delete one code — nobody else is disrupted, nothing gets rekeyed.

Don't forget the owner's closet and the safe
