Self-check-in is now the norm for Tahoe-area rentals — nobody wants to meet a guest at 11pm in a snowstorm to hand over brass. Done right it's more secure than keys. Done lazily it's a standing invitation. The difference is code hygiene.
The four rules of code hygiene
- One code per stay. Auto-generated, auto-expiring. A code that dies at checkout can't come back in February.
- One code per role. Cleaner, caretaker, hot-tub tech, snow removal — each gets a personal standing code you can revoke individually.
- No birthday codes. Guests can see your keypad wear pattern; random beats memorable for standing codes.
- Audit twice a year. Scroll the lock's code list; delete anything you can't name.
Hardware that survives hosting
Rental front doors cycle constantly. Use Grade 2+ keypad deadbolts, lithium batteries each fall, and keep a mechanical override key with the caretaker. If the WiFi dies, codes stored in the lock keep working — pick platforms that work offline.
The forgotten doors
Guests prop garage side doors, leave deck sliders unlatched and discover the owner's closet. Rekey the owner's closet to its own key, add a slider bar, and put the garage on the same code system as the front door.
When a key does walk away
If a physical key leaves with a guest, rekey — it's quick and cheap compared to the alternative. We handle turnover rekeys, lock programming and full STR hardware setups across the North Shore, Truckee and Incline Village.
