“High-security” gets stamped on a lot of packaging. Here's what the term means when it's real, and an honest take on who needs it.
What real high-security cylinders add
- Restricted keyways: blanks aren't sold at kiosks, so keys can't be copied at the hardware store — duplication requires authorization through a licensed dealer.
- Pick and bump resistance: security pins and tighter tolerances defeat the cheap attacks that open bargain cylinders.
- Drill protection: hardened inserts and anti-drill plates.
- Real certification: independent ratings (ANSI/BHMA grades, UL 437 for cylinders) instead of adjectives.
The honest hierarchy of home security
Most residential break-ins never touch the cylinder — doors get kicked, windows get opened. So the value order is: 1) a Grade 1/2 deadbolt with a full 1-inch throw, 2) a reinforced strike with 3-inch screws, 3) good lighting and locked windows, then 4) a high-security cylinder. We'd rather sell you the right $40 fix than the wrong $200 one.
