1. Fire, theft, or both?
They're different engineering problems. Fire resistance is rated in time-at-temperature (a common benchmark keeps the interior below the point where paper chars for 30, 60 or 120 minutes). Burglary resistance is about steel, bolt work and attack time — entry-level “residential security containers” resist a few minutes of hand-tool attack. A document box that survives a fire may open in seconds under a pry bar; buy for the risk you actually care about, or buy a composite safe rated for both.
2. What size? (Bigger than you think)
The universal regret is buying small. Documents, passports, backup drives, a camera body, grandma's ring — it fills fast. As a rule, choose the next size up from the one that fits today's pile.
3. Where does it live?
An unanchored safe is a carrying case with a handle problem. Under ~750 lbs, bolt it down — into concrete where possible, into framing otherwise. Closets on exterior walls, away from master-bedroom obviousness, work well. We deliver, place and anchor as part of installation, and we confirm the floor can take the load first.
Already own one that won't open?
Forgotten combinations, dead keypads and jammed bolt work are routine calls for us. A professional opening usually preserves the safe — tell us make and model on the phone and we'll tell you what's possible before we roll.
