Sliding Doors: The Deck Entrance Burglars Prefer

Security · May 25, 2026 · By Dean Sperlin — Truckee locksmith since 1996

Lake Tahoe shoreline in the Sierra Nevada

Truckee–Tahoe — our home and service area since 1996.

Tahoe architecture loves glass sliders — decks, views, light. Burglars love them too: factory slider latches are the weakest 'lock' on most homes.

Why slider latches fail

They're thin hook latches in aluminum frames — liftable, priable and often simply left unlatched behind a curtain. Some sliders can even be lifted off their track.

The fixes, cheap to serious

  • Security bar or dowel in the track — old-school, still effective.
  • Track pins that stop lifting attacks.
  • Auxiliary slider locks mounted top or bottom, keyed or thumb-operated.
  • Modern multipoint slider hardware for doors that deserve it.

Rental note

Guests use decks constantly and latch them never. Give STR sliders secondary locks that survive enthusiasm, and check them at every turnover.
