Cold is a battery problem before it's a lock problem
Quality electronic deadbolts are rated to roughly −20°F and mechanically shrug off cold. What quits first is the battery: alkaline cells fade fast below freezing. Use lithium AA/AAA cells in any lock on an exposed door and replace them each fall. Expect shorter change intervals than the box promises.
Doors move; electronics notice
Freeze-thaw swells and shifts mountain doors seasonally. A motorized bolt that must fight a misaligned strike burns batteries and strips gears. If your smart lock “grinds” in January, the fix is usually strike alignment — a ten-minute adjustment — not a new lock.
Connectivity in mountain construction
Log walls, metal roofs and long driveways eat WiFi. Locks that speak to a nearby bridge or hub are more reliable than the lock itself holding a long WiFi link. For rentals, pick platforms that store codes in the lock so the door still works when the internet doesn't.
Keep the metal key override honest
Choose a model with a mechanical override cylinder, keep that key somewhere reachable, and have the cylinder keyed into your house key. Electronics fail on the coldest night of the year — that's not pessimism, it's scheduling.
