Every winter the calls cluster: ski lots at 4pm, trailheads at dusk, driveways during the first real storm. Car lockouts spike in cold weather for predictable reasons — which means they're preventable.
Why winter eats keys
- Layers: fobs live in parka pockets that end up in lodges, gear bags and other cars.
- Auto-lock + remote start: warming up the car with the fob inside is the classic modern lockout.
- Snow burial: a dropped fob in powder is gone until April. (Ask us how many we've “found” with a customer's second fob in spring.)
- Frozen locks and gaskets: wet weather-stripping freezes doors shut; forcing handles snaps them.
The three cheap preventions
1. A second fob, tested, at home. Cloning/programming a spare while you still have a working key is the cheap version of this job. 2. A plain metal door key in a wallet or zipped pocket — many fobs hide an emergency blade, and we can cut an inexpensive door-only key for most vehicles. It opens the door even though it won't start the car, which ends the “locked out in the cold” emergency. 3. Carrier habits: pick one zipped pocket that fobs always live in. Boring, effective.
If you're locked out right now
Don't pry the door frame with a scraper — modern weather seals and window regulators are expensive. A mobile locksmith opens vehicles without damage and can make a key on the spot if yours is truly gone. Get somewhere warm, then call.
